Maura Cowan

Postdoctoral Fellow

Maura Cowan is a postdoctoral fellow at the School of Civic Leadership. She specializes in history of ancient philosophy, particularly Plato. Her research and teaching focus on the relationship between philosophy, politics, and poetry. Her current project investigates the critique of poetry in Plato’s Republic, examining the philosophical and political problems that arise from the poets’ depiction of heroism, tragedy, and spiritedness. She earned her Ph.D. in Philosophy from Tulane and holds a B.A. from St. John’s College.
