Reid Comstock

Assistant Director of Student Experience | Assistant Professor of Instruction

Reid Comstock is an assistant professor of instruction and assistant director of student experience at the School of Civic Leadership. In his teaching, he seeks to bring to life the foundational texts of the philosophical tradition so that students will encounter the questions which animate those texts as live and pressing questions and grapple with the answers they offer in a thoughtful and honest way. He believes that through such engagement with the great texts of this tradition students will hone the tools of critical thinking, learn how to engage charitably with one another, and acquire greater clarity about themselves and the world they inhabit. His hope is that by growing in these ways his students will be better equipped to navigate the practical and moral problems that will arise in their own lives. Though he teaches widely across the tradition, his research focuses on ancient philosophy, in particular the thought of Plato and Aristotle. In his research, he examines how Plato and Aristotle think about the connections between virtue, happiness, and education. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Notre Dame.
