Jonathan Dahlsten
Postdoctoral Fellow
Jonathan Dahlsten is a political theorist whose research explores civic education and formation through the history of political thought and contemporary American politics. His dissertation, “The Formative Festival: Public Celebration as Political Education in Plato, Rousseau, and Nietzsche,” recovers a neglected tradition of civic festivals as sites of public formation and education. Dahlsten also conducts research in American politics, including a project examining how the American flag reflects partisan and religious identities and functions as a measure of civil religious sentiment. His research has been published in Political Research Quarterly. He received his B.A. from Carleton College and will receive his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Davis in July 2025.
