Alexis Carré
Assistant Professor
Alexis Carré is an assistant professor of political theory at the School of Civic Leadership. His work examines the philosophical groundings of liberal democracy as the permanence of war puts them to the test. His dissertation, “War and Law: The Refounding of Liberalism Against the Conservative Revolution in Leo Strauss and Raymond Aron,” received the 2021 Raymond Aron prize for research. In this work, he explores how Leo Strauss and Raymond Aron’s response to radical critiques of liberal political thought led them in the direction of a rediscovery of classical political thought. His broader research interests include modern instantiations of classical political thought, radical critiques of liberal democracy, the political thought of Pierre Manent, and military theory. He received his Ph.D. from the École Normale Supérieure (Paris) and carried out his post-doctoral research at Princeton, Harvard, and the University of Texas at Austin.
