Minor in Civic Leadership

The minor in Civic Leadership gives students of any major resources to live well and lead well. Students learn to think in this interdisciplinary minor by wrestling with the great questions of the Western tradition and the American constitutional tradition. Anchor your study a course in the American constitutional tradition (CIV 303C or CIV303J), then take four lower- or upper- division courses in CIV, with options in Constitutionalism, Western Civilization, Civic Leadership, select core courses, and more. Join SCL’s minor in Civic Leadership to gain the virtue and skill that self-government requires.

Minor in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics

Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) began as an interdisciplinary degree program at Oxford in 1924, and, 100 years later, it has spread to well over a hundred universities around the world as either a major or minor area of study. Although often separated into distinct academic departments, the disciplines of philosophy, politics, and economics are closely intertwined. Political institutions and systems determine what can be owned and traded, which contracts will be enforced, and which economic and moral activities will be permitted or prohibited. Economics and philosophy explain, predict, and evaluate behavior under alternative political institutions. Philosophy seeks to understand the nature of human relations and assesses the morality of political and economic decisions.

Minor in PPE students cross the boundaries of these key academic disciplines, integrating the methods, tools, and insights from philosophy, politics, and economics. In doing so, they gain a comprehensive understanding of social, economic, political, and moral problems in relation to one another. SCL offers the minor in PPE in partnership with UT College of Liberal Arts.

Certificate in Classical Education

SCL’s Certificate in Classical Education introduces students to the foundations, pedagogy, and practices of classical education. Choose from a wide range courses to gain exposure to the essential texts, traditions, and ideas of classical education, such as: virtue ethics, the relationship between political and religious life, or civic education. Learn practical classroom skills with experienced teachers in the Practicum course and explore the Foundations of Classical Education with a dedicated teaching professional.

The Certificate in Classical Education emphasizes the quest for wisdom about what it means to gain or offer an education. Take SCL’s Certificate in Classical Education to sharpen your ability to think carefully about the purpose and practice of education in the classical tradition.

BA in Strategy & Statecraft

The Bachelor of Arts with a major in Strategy and Statecraft cultivates judgement and discernment in national and foreign affairs through a rigorous engagement with the classic texts of politics, war, and diplomacy, historical and contemporary analysis, and the practice of statecraft and strategy.

This a degree offered by Clements Center for National Security in partnership with the School of Civic Leadership.

The Ackerman Program

The Ackerman Program on Jewish and Western Civilization is an educational and research center focused on the influence of Jewish ideas and Jewish history on the Western world and the American republic.

The Ackerman Program actively promotes the study of Hebrew as one of the foundational languages of Western civilization and the living language of the Jewish people. Students and scholars in the Ackerman program understand Hebrew as the gateway to tracing the continuity of Jewish life from the biblical age to the age of modern Zionism and to exploring the masterworks of modern Hebrew literature and culture.
