Paul Edgar

Paul Edgar is the Associate Director of the Clements Center for National Security. A philologist of Ancient Near East languages, he holds a PhD in Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures from the University of Texas and studies the historical origins of diplomacy, war, and strategy in pre-classical antiquity. He continues to work on his first book, an international diplomatic history of the Late Bronze Age.

Before his career in higher education, Paul was an infantry officer in the U.S. Army for more than 22 years. Most of his military career was in conventional airborne units, but it also included two tours in special operations, one with the 75th Ranger Regiment and one with the Kingdom of Jordan’s Special Operations Command. He deployed several times to Iraq and Afghanistan. Paul commanded 4th Battalion, 3d Infantry Regiment, where he was responsible for the President’s Honor Guard as well as the Sentinel Platoon at the Tomb of the Unknowns. He spent his last year in the Army as the political advisor for Israeli affairs to the United States Security Coordinator in Jerusalem.
