Robert D. Kaplan
Distinguished Senior Lecturer
Robert D. Kaplan is distinguished senior lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin. A longtime writer on foreign affairs and travel, he is the author of twenty-three books translated into many languages and has reported on foreign affairs for The Atlantic for three decades. He also holds the Robert Strausz-Hupé Chair in Geopolitics at the Foreign Policy Research Institute.
Kaplan has served as a member of the Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board and the U.S. Navy’s Executive Panel, and Foreign Policy twice named him one of the world’s “Top 100 Global Thinkers.” At UT Austin, Kaplan teaches undergraduate and graduate courses, participates in public events, and mentors students. In spring 2025, he taught “Great Thinkers in Realism and Geopolitics” through the School of Civic Leadership.
