The School of Civic Leadership at The University of Texas at Austin is expanding its undergraduate offerings with the launch of a new major: Great Books Honors. Beginning with the Fall 2027 admissions cycle, prospective students can apply to the program alongside the school's existing Civics Honors major.

The Great Books Honors major invites students to engage deeply with the foundational texts of philosophy, literature, theology, science, art, and political thought. Through close reading, seminar-style discussion, and interdisciplinary study, students explore the enduring questions that have shaped civilizations across time while developing the habits of thoughtful inquiry, persuasive writing, and principled leadership.

The new major reflects the School of Civic Leadership's commitment to an education rooted in the humanities, rigorous scholarship, and the study of the ideas and institutions that make free societies possible.

Great Books Honors is offered in partnership with the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Study of Core Texts and Ideas.
